At the end of World War II until 1980, the Fort Lauderdale in Florida was well known as a spring break destination. According to the New York Times, Fort Lauderdale started to be a spring break destination for college students when the men’s swimming team of Colgate University practiced during their break in 1935. In later years, it had become more renowned because of the movie “Where the Boys Are” which was shown in 1960.

The common practice of college students during spring break includes too much drinking and wild sexual activities. Because of these wild exploits, residents of the area complained and it led to the passage of laws by the local government to disallow parties. Also, the National Minimum Drinking Age Act was enacted which upped the minimum age of drinking to 21 years old. With these restrictions, college students traveled outside the United States to spend their spring breaks.
