How to Care For Children’s Wooden Toys

Thursday 2 October 2008 @ 2:33 am

With proper care, your child’s wooden toys can last for generations. Wooden toys have a hardiness and natural appearance that plastic toys cannot match. As a natural material, wood has an advantage over plastic toys. Wood is not bacteria friendly and is considered an anti-bacterial surface. When this quality is combined with the wood’s strength, it is easy to see why wooden toys are a superior toy product when compared to plastic toys.

Wooden toys should be treated with mild cleaners that will not dry out the toy’s surface. The best way to maintain wooden toys is to avoid strong chemicals such as bleach and detergents. Both these harsh ingredients can change the appearance of the toy through whitening or drying the surface. Wooden surfaces can absorb harsh ingredients because of the wood’s porous nature. Bleach, detergents and other harsh or synthetic cleaners are typical strong chemicals that should be avoided in favor of gentler cleansing ingredients.

You can use mild cleansers such as natural soap or a vinegar solution to cleanse wooden toys effectively. Natural soap will clean the wooden toy without drying out its surface or leaving a chemical residue on the toys surface. Vinegar will cleanse the surface and acts as a mild disinfectant. Depending on the amount of soil on the wooden toy, you with either use a soft brush, damp cloth, cleansing spray or a soapy bath.

A lightly soiled wooden toy is the easiest to clean. When a wooden toy is lightly soiled, you can gently brush any dirt or debris away. If necessary, you can use a soft damp cloth to clean the surface.

For a wooden toy that has a bit more dirt on it, you can add a few drops of liquid natural soap to a spray bottle full of warm water for a cleansing spray. You could also use a 50/50 water and vinegar spray to clean the toy as well. Just spray the surface and quickly wipe the surface clean.

If a toy is heavily soiled, you can wash it briefly in a bath of soapy water. You should avoid leaving the wooden toys submerged in water for any length of time. Water can misshape wooden toys and mar the surface of the grain. Avoid steam cleaning the toy for the same reasons. After cleansing the wooden toy in the soapy bath, quickly rinse the toy and wipe it dry. You can place the toy in the rack to dry. Once the toy is fully dry, it can be used again.

Wooden toys are prone to changes in temperature and humidity. Do not leave wooden toys outside overnight or for long periods. The sun and elements can change the appearance and shape of wooden toys.

When wooden toys are properly maintained, it is possible for many generations of children to enjoy the same wooden toy. Many a grandparent’s wooden toy has survived time to land in the happy hands of a beloved grandchild or grandchildren. Wooden toys are valued in many households for their durability and natural beauty.

How to Prepare For Your Childs Party

Thursday 2 October 2008 @ 2:00 am

If you and your family plan on throwing your child a party, I have some practical tips for you. These tips are all safe and fun but also very useful. I will discuss outdoor parties in addition to parties thrown at public locations such as Chucky Cheese. You don’t want to miss my personal take on themed parties either. It may not be a popular opinion but it need to be said. There is no set way when and where to have parties and since each kid is different, their parties should be also.

Activities

For out door parties, kites can be great. A nice sized park area in the spring is an ideal location for a kid’s party. Picnic baskets and blankets make it relaxing while the kid’s run around the park. Games such as pin the tail on the donkey for younger children, pilatas or even races could all be done during the party.

While various activities and contest are occupying the kid’s, parents and guest can help with the food, drinks and restroom needs. Some things you will need to bring are candles, insect repellent; trash bags and water just to name a few. Sports related fun could include volleyball, softball and potato sack races. If you want to cook, bring the grill for some nice barbecue. If you have limited space in your backyard but would like to have an outdoor party, check out your local parks for a location.

Public Locations

Many businesses specialize in hosting kid’s parties. Roller skating rinks, arcades and pizza parlors all have party deals set up. Normally the food and drinks are provided along with whatever service they include. An arcade party with provide the kid’s with tokens and tickets while a skating rink might provide the food and free skate rentals. Since the locations are usually open to the public, it’s like having many people celebrating your child’s birthday. However, many places will let you rent their location exclusively for the right price.

In some instances, they will extend their hours just for the birthday party well past their normal closing hours. Depending on the locations package, this could be a good way to save lots of money and still offer the same amount of fun. Also, you aren’t doing the work such as cooking and providing the entertainment because you are paying for that through the birthday caterer. A good place to check for a catered party is a mall based arcade game room.

Party Themes?

I for one have not seen the benefits of themed parties. Theme parties are those that follow a certain pattern in all aspects of the party. In my own experience it is a waste of money to pay extra for a cake with a character on it. The same goes for plates, candles and napkins. If your child just loves a cartoon, that doesn’t mean that the cartoon should dictate the party. It is much cheaper to purchase regular party supplies opposed to getting the same supplies with cartoons on them. My advice would simply be don’t waste your time. Too much of one thing looks tacky, especially if it comes in the image of a yellow sponge. In all reality the theme itself usually steals the show away from the kid.

If you are going to through kids parties you need to have the best toys and activities. Check out our baby toiletries for all your infants needs.

Where Have All the Bicycles Gone?

Thursday 2 October 2008 @ 12:39 am

Childhood has moved indoors. What a shame. Children are meant to be running free in open spaces, climbing trees, finding frogs and turtles, biking to the playground, and being hard to find at dinnertime. Today’s child is most likely to be found sitting in front of a screen – TV, video games, computers. 8-10 year olds reportedly spend an average of 6 hours a day staring at a screen. Given an additional 6 hours spent in school plus eating, sleeping, homework and we have taken our children’s worlds and turned them into tiny, structured spaces with little physical activity and almost no free play time. Organized sports have become the play of many children but actually only about a quarter of all children are playing an organized sport during any season of the year. So the vast majority are just sitting around, growing obese at an alarming rate and missing out on important socializing.

How did we come to such a place where the lives of our children are so restricted and isolated? Well, we can start with the lives of their parents. American adults, as chronicled in Robert Putnam’s “Bowling Alone”, have become isolated from their community. Participation in all aspects of community life has dropped dramatically over the past 30 years. One of the interesting points in Putnam’s book is that bowling remains very popular, but bowling leagues have virtually disappeared. Adults no longer feel they have time to make commitments to be with others on a regular basis. A colleague of mine just remarked about how she wanted to start playing bridge again, found some friends with a similar desire, found a teacher, and then discovered her friends were unable to commit to a regular time for lessons.

What has happened to American adults? Changes in family structure are a major factor. With so many divorces, we have a much higher percentage of single heads of households and blended families, resulting in much more complex life schedules for parents and children. Further, dual career parents have become the norm and work has increasingly encroached on the privacy of home life with the advent of cell phones and computers. Americans work longer hours than any other industrialized nation.

In this context of reduced hands on parenting and overwhelming schedules, the current generation of parents has evolved into an anxious group who are overly concerned about the safety and the academic/intellectual development of their children. Too bad … for the parents and the children. We end up with smarter fat children who are more stressed and growing up too fast. Higher rates of anxiety and depression are no accident.

So where have all the bicycles gone? Getting that first 2-wheeler used to be one of childhoods most exciting moments. It meant an expansion of the child’s world. The opportunity to travel beyond one’s street and meet friends at the playground, ball field, or just go to someone’s house on your own was an exciting new stage of independence. It also meant lots of exercise. But bicycle sales are plummeting. Over 20% decline in just the past 5 years. Now less than half of children ages 7-11 regularly ride a bike. This is a serious change in the culture of our children’s lives.

But it is not just the crazy schedule of parents or the increased temptation of “screens” to play with. A major role in the narrowing world of children is parental fear. Surveys indicate parents have a distorted expectation of the risk that if they allow their children to roam freely about the town, those children may be abducted by child molesters. School playgrounds are no longer deemed safe places to hang out. The woods are no longer a great place to explore. Biking across town has come to mean an increased possibility of being abducted.

Parents couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, there are only 100-130 stranger abductions a year in the U.S. This is a miniscule number. I’m not being insensitive to the pain of those parents who have had a child abducted and molested or killed but please let’s keep some perspective here. You and your child are 3 times more likely to be hit by lightening at a soccer game than your child is likely to experience a stranger abduction!

Notice I keep emphasizing “stranger abduction.” 75% of all abductions are carried out by people the child knows, I suspect most of which are done by divorced parents who are upset about custody arrangements. Children running free – meeting at the playground or in someone’s yard – are very safe. Not only safe, but these children are learning to make creative use of their time, being physically active, and improving their social skills. And it’s free!! Now what more could you ask for.

So please, restrict access to screens, send your children out of the house, encourage them to go places on their own, and don’t just smile when your child opts to use instant messaging to talk to her friend next door. Turn off the computer and send her next door! Consider it a pleasure to yell down the street or call a friend to find your child at dinnertime instead of simply having to pry him away from his XBox. Let’s make bicycles something special for children once again.

Baby Girl Bedding - Great Themes For Your Nursery

Monday 29 September 2008 @ 11:31 pm

If you are expecting a new little girl, no doubt you are excited about her coming into your life. While you probably can’t wait until she arrives, you also will want to make sure that you are prepared before the due date. One of the most important things to get ready is the baby room, and you’ll want to pick out beautiful bedding and matching accessories for the perfect nursery. Lucky for you, there are plenty of themes available; in fact, there are so many that you may find it difficult to pick out the right one. So, if you need a few ideas for inspiration, here are some great themes to consider using for a girl’s nursery.

Designs By Laura Ashley

If you are looking for great baby girl bedding, you may want to consider the bedding designs of Laura Ashley - a perennial favorite and afforadably priced, too. There are a variety of colors and patterns that you can choose from, mainly focused around beautiful pastels. You can find these collections on the internet and in stores such as Target.

Lady Bug Theme

Another great idea for your nursery is the lady bug theme. While an absolutely adorable theme, there is a possibility that the red, black, and white that usually forms the color scheme might be too stimulating for your daughter’s resting place. To counter this, try to avoid highly contrasting designs or large patches of black and red (no giant ladybugs!). If you do choose this theme, you can do a lot of the decorating yourself - buy a ladybug bedding set, and use stencils to decorate the walls.

Various Character Themes

There are a variety of great character themes that will make a wonderful choice in the you little girl’s new room. Options include Winnie the Pooh, Precious Moments, Disney Princess, Mickey Sweet Dreams, Hello Kitty, or even Snoopy. There are so many great character themes that you can find, so you’ll be sure to find the perfect one for your new sweetheart.

Princess Theme

The princess theme is understandably very popular for baby girls. No doubt she’ll be your little princess, so why not carry out the theme in her room? You can find beautiful princess themed bedding, furniture, accessories and more. It’s very easy to decorate the nursery in this theme, and you can paint murals or borders on the walls that will go along with the theme as well. Consider even making the room like a castle, complete with everything you can imagine in the princess theme. No doubt this will be a room that everyone, especially your new baby girl, will end up loving.

Patchwork and Plaid Themes

Patchwork themes and plaid themes are also great ideas when you are decorating for a baby girl. Simply pick out a color that you want to go with, and then you can use accenting colors to go along with it. Painting the room will be simple, since you should be able to easily match the colors with paint. There are many great themes of this style to choose from and you can easily find them on the internet.

Celestial Themes

Going with a celestial theme for your baby girl nursery is a wonderful idea and it’s very easy to find great baby bedding in these themes. You’ll be able to send your baby to dreamland with ease when you use this type of a theme. Some ideas include constellations, moons, planets, the sun, stars, and other things you’ll find in the heavens. Whites, pastels, and blues are great colors to use for these types of themes. This is one of the few themes that you will want to seriously consider decoration the ceiling, either with paint or glow in the dark stars (be mindful of safety precautions). There are many great wall decorations and bedding choices available in this theme, so you’ll easily end up falling in love with a celestial nursery to welcome your new baby girl into the world.

As you can see, there are definitely a variety of great themes available when it comes to choosing a nursery theme. With so many to choose from, it can be difficult to make a choice - just let your eyes and heart guide you. If you are planning to have more children, you might want to consider a gender-neutral theme that can be re-used. If the nursery will become your daughter’s room as she grows up, think about going with a theme that she can continue to enjoy as she grows older. Take your time, consider your baby girl, and consider one of these great themes.

Choosing an Infant Car Seat - How to Help Ensure Your Child’s Comfort and Safety

Monday 29 September 2008 @ 7:36 am

Infant car seats are designed for the comfort of newborns, and can be used from an infant’s birth until the infant reaches a weight of approximately 20 pounds (depending on the model of the car seat). These car seats are designed to be used in a rear facing position, with the infant riding in a lying down position, and with the car seat, itself, secured either by the car’s seat belts or a special anchoring system, and the infant secured in the car seat by a harness. This arrangement provides the infant with the best protection while riding in a vehicle. Infant car seats come in a variety of designs, colors, and patterns, and their cost and available features vary by brand and model. Child car seat manufacturers are bound by very strict guidelines, and you may be surprised to find that some of the more expensive car seats don’t provide any better level of protection than those which are more moderately priced.

There are also ‘convertible’ infant/toddler child car seats available. These car seats can be used for children from infancy (with the car seat in the rear facing position), into their toddler years (with the car seat turned around and used in the forward facing position), until they are ready for a booster car seat. In the rear facing mode, these types of car seats can typically be used with a child up to about 25 lbs, and then used in the forward facing position until the child reaches about 40 lbs. These types of car seats have a larger seat than an infant only car seat, and many come with padded inserts for use when the child is still small.

Whichever type of child car seat is used, the car seat’s harness should fit the child snugly, but not too tightly, and the harness straps should be easily adjustable. Many of the newer models feature a ‘five point’ harness to keep the child secure. The straps should be long enough both to allow room for the bulkier clothing that the child will wear in colder weather, as well as to allow for the child’s continuing growth, so that he or she will not outgrow the car seat prematurely.

There are a variety of accessories available for many models of car seats for infants. A common accessory is a head rest for the infant. This is a small inverted U shaped piece that helps keep the infant’s head secure, and prevents him or her from slumping over in the car seat while riding.

Some child car seats have a detachable base that stays in the vehicle, and to which the part of the car seat that the child sits in can be locked. With this type of car seat, the base must be set properly in place before the other piece is locked to it, or the combination will not provide the child with the highest level of protection. Extra bases may be available for purchase to allow the same carrier to be used in multiple vehicles without having to keep shifting the base between the vehicles. Also, some car seats are compatible with strollers, to create a convenient infant travel system.

How to Raise Healthy Kids

Sunday 28 September 2008 @ 9:40 pm

There are so many obstacles to having healthy kids in our society today. Everything from what they eat to what they do with their spare time can contribute to weight gain and unhealthy bodies. We want our children to be healthy, we just need help figuring out what the potholes are that we should be looking for.

Our standard American diet is known in health food circles as the SAD diet. There are quite a few ingredients in processed foods that are supposed to be good for us but, in fact, are not. For example, that whole wheat bread you’ve bought your family most likely has high fructose corn syrup in it. The fruit snacks that look healthy, (they’re fruit, right?) almost certainly have food dyes in them. The peanut butter, a good source of protein and a favorite for lunchboxes because it won’t spoil, will most likely have partially hydrogenated oils in it. All of these ingredients are known to cause health problems and should be carefully avoided.

How do you avoid them, you ask. It may seem difficult and time consuming at first, but the careful consumer will read the labels for these three high-risk ingredients. There are some enlightened manufacturers who are changing their ingredients for the better.

The good news is, as more parents become aware of and avoid these high-risk ingredients, more healthy alternatives will become available. There are already companies who make fruit snacks using minute amounts of vegetable juice to add color instead of artificially manufactured food coloring. (Which is often made from petroleum.)

There is peanut butter available without partially-hydrogenated oil, you’ll just have to hunt for it a bit. The bread is harder, even fresh made deli whole wheat bread often has high-fructose corn syrup in it. Often, health food stores are the only place to get a truly healthy loaf of bread.

Our children’s hobbies also put them at risk. Watching television and playing video games, even for an hour each evening robs them of the opportunity to interact socially with others. It also keeps them sitting still instead of running, jumping and playing in the fresh air, which is, by the way, healthier than indoor air. Instead of riding their bikes up to the park to play a game of basketball with their friends, they are pushing buttons while a computer animated basketball goes through a hoop.

It is so much better for them to develop hand eye coordination by actually playing real basketball with a real hoop. Even if you don’t have one of those portable basketball hoops in your driveway, there is probably one at a local school or playground.

Fine motor skills can be developed by having them help you snap the fresh green beans you picked up for dinner. No beans? Have them wash the silverware for you after dinner tonight. Anything you can think of that they will use their fingers to do will help them develop these fine motor skills. They do not need a video game to teach them this or any other skill.

Changing our lives entirely at one time seems quite overwhelming and is, in reality, unnecessary. Once you are aware of the pitfalls to children’s health, you can take steps to work in the right direction.

If your child is used to playing video games or watching television every evening, send them outside to play for 15 minutes first. After a month or so, make it 30 minutes, then 45. At the same time, read labels as you do your grocery shopping. Set a goal to find one new item each trip that is a healthier option that your regular brand. These small adjustments will go a long way to investing in your child’s health.

The Wish List

Friday 26 September 2008 @ 7:07 am

“But, Mom! Why can’t I have them? I’m the only kid in my class who has to wear these lame shoes! You don’t know how embarrassing it is. All the cool kids have them. Besides, they only cost $160. I’m the only kid in my class who has to wear these lame shoes! You don’t know how embarrassing it is. You and Dad get everything you want…and, don’t tell me that I need to earn them myself. None of my friends get treated like this. This is so bogus! And besides that, Britney says that it’s the parents’ job to get good stuff for their kids,” Trinity laments.

“How many times have I told you that you don’t need these things just because your friends have them?” answered Mom. “You have perfectly good shoes that you don’t even wear. If I remember right, you were going to die if you didn’t get the last pair. You wore them twice and I haven’t seen them on your feet since.”

“Where am I supposed to get the kind of money to keep getting you everything you want? Young lady, you’re going to have to realize that I’m not an Automatic Teller Machine. It’s about time that you showed a little appreciation for what you have instead of constantly demanding more and more.”

“But, Mom! You could loan me the money. If you just loan me the money, I promise I’ll pay you back. It’s important!”

“What are you talking about?” Mom asked. “I’ve heard that before, but I never see the money. It’s about time you learned a little responsibility.”

“But, Mom, I’ve learned my lesson. I promise.”

“Oh, alright! I’ll loan you the money, but if you don’t pay it back, this is the last time!”

This conversation has become a weekly event at Trinity’s house. Mom and Dad have tried to explain to her that she doesn’t need everything she sees advertised. Lecture after lecture has fallen on deaf ears, resulting in the parents finally giving in and buying the object of Trinity’s desires, only to discover that their daughter’s obsession with materialism grows with each new acquisition. The more she gets, the more she wants.

END THE BEGGING

In the house across the street things are handled in a different way. Fourteen-year-old Tracy doesn’t have Trinity’s sense of entitlement. She has a deep sense of appreciation for her belongings.

This all started at an early age when Tracy started to think about all the things she wanted. One day it was a pony. The next day it was a bicycle. Each time her friend got something new, she wanted it too. Her begging knew no bounds.

Tracy’s mother had attended a Love and Logic class where the instructor reminded the class that “we don’t want to squash the dreams of our kids.” Many parents do this in an attempt to help their children avoid disappointment by telling them that their dreams are impossible.

The instructor gave an example of a child who talked of becoming an astronaut. His mother told him that it was really not possible because so few people get into the program. Little did she know that trying to protect him from disappointment told him that he didn’t have what she believed it took to reach his dream.

AMAZING RESULTS

Taking this information to heart, Tracy’s mom developed the idea of a “Wish List.” It taught Tracy that she could pursue her dreams, it put a stop to begging, and it taught her the value of earning and managing her money.

So, when Tracy started talking about how much she wanted to start skiing, take swimming lessons, and get a new tennis racket, her mom didn’t lecture about the costs, but responded with, “Oh, wouldn’t that be nice. Put those things on your Wish List.” Each time Tracy saw something else she wanted, Mom said, “Good idea. Put that on your Wish List.”

“But when are you going to get these things for me?” whined Tracy.

“I didn’t say I was going to buy those things. I said it would be wonderful for you to have them. When I want things I put them on my wish list. Then I prioritize them by putting numbers on them. Once I do that, I do some research to find out how much they cost and how long I am going to have to save my money to afford them. Now would be a good time for you to start doing that.”

With Mom’s help Tracy learned the value of writing down the things she wanted, prioritizing her wishes, comparing the costs to her finances, keeping track of her savings, and earning the things she wanted.

Tracy soon decided that ski equipment was her first priority. After doing some research and finding that she either needed to save her allowance for three years, or find some other way to raise the money, she changed her priorities and the tennis racket become her number-one goal. She still had to save for several months to afford it, but as you can guess, she took good care of the prize she had worked so hard to achieve.

Now that Tracy is a teen she is pursuing her other dreams in the same way. One day she announced to her folks that she was going to become an airline pilot. Her parents didn’t tell her how difficult that was going to be.

They knew that their daughter could find that out on her own, or that she could discover for herself that she had what it takes to realize her goal. I bet you know what they said to her when she told them that she wanted to go to pilot school, “Oh, that’s a great idea. Put that on your wish list.”

Mom looks back on starting the wish list idea with her daughter and remembers that it wasn’t as simple as it seems. Tracy did her share of complaining and arguing. But that only lasted until she discovered that her parents meant business.

Dad reports that it wasn’t long before Tracy tried to turn the tables on them. “Hey, Tracy,” Dad called. “I’d like you to look after your little brother tonight. Mom and I are going shopping.”

“Hey, Dad. That sounds like a great idea. Put that on your wish list.”

“That was a nice try, Tracy. But you might give some careful thought to the wisdom of that snappy come-back.” And that is a story for another time.

Tips For Keeping Your Cool

Thursday 25 September 2008 @ 1:17 pm

Taking care of children is a stressful job that never really ends. Parents learn very quickly in those first crucial years that it truly is the hardest job in the world. Nothing can ever compare to being a parent. Dealing with children can become problematic and stressful. Whether you have one child or several, your stress level will reach outstanding levels. Knowing how to deal with this while keeping your temper in check is an acquired skill.

When you find yourself having that same argument with your child that you have already had many times before, walk away. There is no sense in dragging it on and on. Kids can be relentless and not know when to stop. Their sense of time is also much different which allows them to outlast parents quite often. Put an end to arguments by saying the final word on it and walking away. It is necessary to take a few minutes for yourself to take a few deep breaths and maintain your composure.

Do not hesitate to have your child leave the room and go for a time out when they will not listen. A time out is a way of indicating to children that their behaviour is not going to get them anything positive. It is often recommended that children have a time out that is related to their age. For example, a five year old would go for a five minute time out. Don’t forgo time outs unless you have a better method that is sure to work.

If you threaten your children with some kind of punishment such as taking away a toy or game, be sure to follow through with it. Parents who threaten but never follow through are giving their children a ton of power over them and that’s just not the way it should be. If you tell your child they will get a time out and they persist in their behaviour, off they go to their room. No amount of pleading or whining should make a difference in this.

Always take time for yourself. Too much time with your children can be negative. It’s important for all of us to have time for ourselves. Go out and participate in your favourite hobbies or visit with friends. Adults need time with other adults so don’t deny yourself of that. It makes you appreciate your family so much more after. Likewise, married couples need time together without the kids once in a while too. It’s necessary for a healthy relationship.

Don’t forget who the adult is. Kids have a way of figuring out very early on how to manipulate their parents. However, they are not the adult in the situation so when they are trying your patience, remember that. It’s up to you to keep control of the situation. Keeping your cool can be difficult but it must be done. Stay calm and cool when the kids are making you crazy and you’ll find the outcome is much more positive.

Thursday 25 September 2008 @ 12:56 pm

Playtime is one of the most important things in a child’s day. It helps them to do so many things including learn and develop through exercise. Kids need to have regular playtime in order to grow into fully functioning adults. Of course, as fun as it is to play and run and jump, it can also be dangerous. There are a few things that parents can do to establish healthy and safe playtime for their children. By incorporating some rules and guidelines, playtime can be safer and more beneficial for both the children and the parents.

As your small child is growing, teach them the meaning of things like no hitting. Violence starts very early on in children and it has to be stopped before they believe that it is an acceptable form of behaviour. Teaching kids to play safely with one another shows them that they are not invincible and must live by certain rules if they wish to enjoy their time spent playing.

Sharing is an absolute must. Small children rarely want to see someone else enjoying their toys. Though some adults are much the same, it’s not a character trait that looks good on most people. Teach your kids about sharing while doing regular activities at home. There are many ways it can come up. Portray sharing as something that you want to do to show your friends that you care about them. It sure beats the alternative of coming across like a selfish kid that will be a selfish adult if not reprimanded.

Wherever you allow your children to play, be certain that it is the safest place possible. Keep small kids away from busy roads or open yards. It takes just seconds for a child to wander on to the road and small children are easily missed by drivers due to their small stature. Likewise, any playground that you choose to take your kids to should be enclosed by a fence. If you have valid safety concerns with your local playgrounds, bring it to the attention of your local municipality immediately.

Supervise children while they are at play. It seems that the worst accidents that take place during playtime are those that involved unsupervised kids. Never leave them unattended in any place that poses obvious danger like a swimming pool or public place. Even if you think your child is old enough, it may be a good idea to keep a close eye on them anyway. Accidents take just seconds and most of them are preventable.

When kids get playing hard they can work up a big appetite. Keep snacks and drinks on hand and be sure to serve them at regular intervals. Dehydration happens easily, especially during hot days. Make sure kids always have access to fresh water or proper fruit juices. Replenishing lost fluids is essential when playing hard.

Playing is already a healthy activity. However, parents can do a lot to make it even better. Do what’s best for your kids while at play.
