Ten Speaker Tips to Make Any Presentation Sparkle

Thursday 2 October 2008 @ 1:42 am

We talk a lot about speaking and not to plan a book signing, but rather a book event. However, many of you have been emailing to say “Speaker tips, please!” Here they are, just a few tips to turn any presentation from so-so to sensational!

1. Don’t overwhelm your audience with too much stuff. When I first started speaking over five years ago, I would show up with sixty pages of notes. One of the people in the audience said to me “You’re not planning on covering all of that, are you?” Indeed. As time progressed I realized that my audience would get more with less. While I encourage you to fill your presentation with great information, save the overstuffing for your Thanksgiving turkey and keep your presentation flowing with enough information to sustain, but not so much as to overwhelm. How much is too much? Well, you might have to experiment with this a bit before you get it just right. Try practicing your presentation at home in front of some people who can give you objective feedback, this will really help you polish your program before you go out to the “real” audience. Keep in mind that when you rehearse, your presentation is bound to be shorter; things like questions and audience interaction will also lengthen your speaking time.

2. Look ‘em in the eye: you should always try to make eye contact with your audience; in fact, I recommend that you make and keep eye contact for at least five seconds with select individuals. This will help to engage the listener. Don’t look over their heads at the back wall or your product table, keep your eyes focused on the people who came to hear you speak.

3. Move around, don’t hide behind the podium: it’s easy to seek shelter behind a speaker podium, especially when you’re nervous, but the podium is a subconscious “block” between you and your audience. Try to move as far away from it as you can.

4. Gestures and facial expressions are good: vary your gestures and facial expressions. An animated speaker is far more engaging than one who has perfected the Poker-face look. This is especially true if you want to keep your presentation light or if you’re presenting humorous material. Also, *smile* - it’s amazing how a warm and welcoming smile can really engage your audience.

5. Attire: when in doubt, get dressed up. If you’re not sure of the attire I always recommend dressing up. If need be you can always remove your jacket and/or tie, but it’s hard to recover when you show up in your casual clothes and find everyone else is in a suit.

6. Leave the monotone voice at home: vary your voice, don’t keep to one speed. Vary the speed and rhythm, it’s almost like riding a roller coaster. One minute you’re fast, then slow, then climbing. Keep it varied and you’ll keep your audience’s attention. As for using “um” and “eh” well, you know that’s a no-no, no sense in taking up space here to remind you that you should avoid those place fillers at all costs. If you need some practice getting those out of your vernacular, try attending a Toastmasters group in your local area.

7. Using PowerPoint? Go easy on the text: if you use too much text on your PowerPoint you’ll find that people are reading the text on the slides instead of listening to you. A good balance is a few words to highlight your key points, just enough to get their attention - but not so much that they’re forced to read what’s on the screen. Figure about 10 slides for every 20 minutes of presentation time. Your font size should be 30 point or larger.

8. Handouts are a must: make sure you give them something to take home with them. What I also do is create a handout and then offer to send my audience the PowerPoint presentation they just viewed. I get them to sign up for it, which gives me their email addresses to not only send them the presentation, but a thank-you note along with an invitation to join our newsletter!

9. Record yourself: as scary as this sounds this is one of the best ways to better yourself as a speaker. Record your presentation and wait a day to listen to it, this will give you enough “space” from the program to clear your mind and listen to the audio objectively. Note what you liked and didn’t like and don’t worry if you feel like you flubbed the whole thing. Remember that your audience isn’t grading you, they are there for information, and as long as you lived up to your promise you can keep correcting and enhancing your speaking talent with each program.

10. Now let’s talk about BOR (back of the room product). Your BOR can make a huge difference in the money you make on your speaking. Most new speakers don’t make money on speaking, or very little, but the BOR is where you can strike gold. Here are some tips to maximize it. First off, your flexibility for BOR will depend on whether you’re presenting in a speaker-type setup or at a bookstore, but either way, have product to sell regardless of who supplies it. If you can be flexible with what you offer, try packaging several items together, offer a one-time discount for the packaged product and this is a little trick I borrowed from a friend of mine: put together several packages, high end, low end and something in the middle. Attendees of your event will generally pick the middle of the road pricing, which is probably more than you’d sell a single book for. Also, get folks to sign up for your mailing list. Regardless of what you can and can’t sell, make sure you can add people to your list so you can market to them again, and again, and again!

3 Critical Features You Need When Selecting a Gadget Bag

Wednesday 1 October 2008 @ 10:35 am

As you grow in photography, you will accumulate many tools that you use in creating great photos to enlarge and display around your home: tripods - table top and full size, filters, lenses and lens accessories, light reflectors, flash, the occasional light meter, etc. And as you range far afield taking photographs, you will definitely need a convenient way to carry and manage these accessories, Here are the top three features to look for as you select this most critical accessory.

#1 - Easy to Carry. There are three main styles of gadget bag.

The traditional “over the shoulder” type bag that opens at the top for convenient access without putting the bag down in difficult situations, and it can be swung around to your back as you actually take pictures.

Next, the “belt type.” This is very handy, but usually only good for smaller cameras and more limited collections of accessories. However, there are several “cone shaped” pouches that can be used on belt systems that keep larger cameras with long lenses “quick draw” ready for those quick shots. And the extra pouches can accommodate other lenses and accessories, also keeping them fingertip ready.

The “backpack type” bags will carry the most equipment, though they are a bit more difficult to access. These larger bags also usually have ways to carry full sized tripods built in, along with a complete array of camera gear, plus a sandwich to tide you over as you go through your photographic day - or evening. Some even have room for a laptop computer so you can offload images as you go about your photographic adventure.

#2 - Easy to Access. In many ways this is controlled by the number of pieces that you carry, and how often you have to handle and change them. A bag that is divided into separate compartments will keep your gear organized and at your fingertips ready for use - and better protected. Your own shooting style will help you determine how you want to access your equipment, but it should always be trouble free. Remember that caught straps can lead to dropped equipment.

#3 - Effective Padding. Definitely one of the most important factors. There should be enough padding to protect your valuable camera and its accessories (you wouldn’t want a critical lens or accessory to get banged and broken just when you want to use it for that great shot), but not so much that it adds significantly to the weight and bulk that you have to carry. You may even consider two bags, one for moving equipment with lots of padding, plus a more lightly padded bag for actually walking around and shooting.

Within these three basic styles are an almost infinite number of variations and combinations. As you do your research, you will probably find that you will wind up with several different bags to use for different photography adventures. The important thing is to have the equipment you need easily at hand to create those great photos that you will proudly display around your home.

Coordinating Your Wedding Day

Wednesday 1 October 2008 @ 8:14 am

Choose your wedding colour scheme at the beginning of your wedding plans.

Everything from your dress, bridesmaid’s dresses, and your flowers right down to your invitation cards will be affected by your choice of colour scheme.

If you start with a base colour that you like and work with complimentary colours to the other aspects of the wedding then you should be relatively safe in creating a harmonious and visually pleasing wedding ceremony.

With theme weddings a lot of the colours will be determined by the theme and to some people this can actually make it a lot easier with choices.

It is often a good idea to have a discussion with your photographer before finalizing your colours as these can have a dramatic effect on the outcome of your wedding photos.

A good photographer will be able to look at the venue, your own skin colours and that of your partner, your choices of clothing and flowers and any other factors that you have listed on your wedding checklist and give you a good idea of whether there will be anything that will have a detrimental effect on the photographs.

It is times like these that the advice of professionals is most welcome and can have a huge impact on so many other factors.

It is well worth investing the extra money if at all possible to get professional advice in these matters before you start spending the money on purchasing dresses, flowers and so on.

If you were to hire a wedding planner they would coordinate all these various different aspects of the wedding and ensure that they will all tie in with one another for a harmonious event.

Don’t fret if you can’t afford this type of advice however because you can always copy other wedding arrangements where you find someone who has similar colours and preferences as your own.

If you intend to have bridesmaids then once you have selected your own dress it will be time to choose theirs. Their dresses should compliment yours but it is important to have their input so that they feel comfortable on the day and that they look their best.

By coordinating all these various aspects you will get a very professional look to the wedding and this will enhance the photos and show that a lot of care and decision-making has gone into making your wedding such a special day. A good place to get wedding ideas is from the many different wedding magazines and books that are available.

There are also many wedding books that you can get through the local libraries but many of these are sometimes outdated so current magazines are the best choice.

A lot of people like to style their weddings these days based on celebrity weddings that they have seen and that might be one area that you could take a look at the get some ideas.

You can also go to the local churches and reception areas when you know there are weddings in progress to see what other people are wearing and doing to give you ideas for your own wedding.

Go to the wedding shops and look at the way that they display the wedding gowns to give you some idea of the combinations of materials and how they will work with the various bouquets and other flower arrangements.

Most of the shops will have wedding albums that you can look through and if you see something that you like it is easier to copy knowing that it will look right rather than trying to create your own style if you don’t have professional advice to put it all together properly.

Even look at the window displays at the various wedding shops to see all the other ancillary displays that they have to help promote their dresses as these will also help to add flair to your wedding and particularly at the display at the reception.

The more you look around and see what other people are doing the more ideas you will get which will make the whole process a lot easier.

There is so much information that is freely available, that giving yourself enough time planning for the wedding, will ensure you create a theme that you can be happy with on almost any budget.

Pheromones Are Entertaining

Wednesday 1 October 2008 @ 8:00 am

People wear pheromones to help get attention from the opposite gender. Sometimes, however, wearing pheromones can create unexpected reactions and even humorous situations. This author has personally worn a powerful high quality two-pheromone product with 17 special proprietary fragrances that helps promote sensual and romantic thoughts in the opposite sex. This special combination has proven to be a potent combination that has created many memorable experiences.

One experience that has been etched into my memory is my visit to a food court at a shopping mall. The experience reminds me of the adage, “be careful of what you wish for.” Before entering the mall, I applied the special pheromone mixture by applying the roll-on applicator on my forehead, bridge of my nose, and my chin. (I recently found out from an associate in Singapore that this method of application is the preferred method of shaman in his country.) Pheromones were somewhat new to me at that time and I wanted to conduct a little experiment. I was curious to find out if I would get a reaction from any women in my vicinity.

After I picked up my lunch I walked past an attractive woman who glanced at me and happened to be sitting next to the only available table I could find. I did not think anything of her as I sat down and immediately started to enjoy my lunch. While eating my lunch I felt an uneasy feeling as if someone was watching me. I looked around my surroundings only to discover that the attractive woman was looking intently at me with penetrating eyes. I found it interesting that even after I caught her staring at me, she did not break off eye contact. As a married man, the situation became uncomfortable for me and made it very hard to enjoy my lunch. I couldn’t help but laugh to myself when I thought of all the times when I was single how I wished I had such an opportunity. If I had been single and interested in meeting her, it would have been the perfect occasion at that moment to walk over to her and strike up a conversation. Consequently, I ate my lunch and left the area as quickly as I could to escape her obvious response to my pheromones.

A few years ago I attended a large trade show in Baltimore. Again, before entering the show I applied the special pheromone/scent to my skin. When I walked around I detected interest from some beautiful models that were running some of the exhibits. At one manufacturer’s booth a beautiful young woman kept on interrupting me while I was talking to a representative about their products. Although the girl was attractive, her interjections had no relevance to my questions and were almost annoying. It was obvious that she was responding to my pheromones and this could have been a romantic opportunity waiting to happen.

A more intense experience happened at the end of the show when I visited one of the last exhibits. I struck up a conversation with a beautiful young woman about the products she represented. I immediately asked her if she was a model so that I could rule out that she was not a temporary pretty face with limited product knowledge. I was surprised when she replied that she worked for the company. However, she did explain that other people had asked her to model in the past, but had declined to pursue her business career.

The more I talked to her the more I noticed a curious situation in progress. She seemed to be getting closer and closer to me and was starting to invade my space. Finally she was so close to me that our noses could almost touch each other. Normally I would have turned away from someone doing that to me, but in this situation I somehow managed eye contact.

After awhile the woman asked me what I did for a living. I replied that I marketed pheromones. To my surprise she candidly replied that she had not had thoughts like she was having since her college days. Again, the pheromones were doing their job and I believe she would have been even more aggressive with me under different circumstances.

Wearing pheromones can be entertaining. You never know when or how they may affect the opposite sex with positive results. Sometimes the reaction is subtle and the reaction can be noted by the person’s body language. And at other times the reaction can be obvious with somewhat more aggressive behavior such as moving in closer or flirting. Depending on your circumstances, pheromones can either create opportunities or humorous situations. Either way, they do the job.

Caffeine Addiction – Quick Tips to Make Quitting Easier

Wednesday 1 October 2008 @ 7:40 am

Caffeine addiction is no small matter. Many people scoff that it’s “just a little coffee habit” and then find out very quickly when trying to quit that a caffeine dependency is a serious challenge.

In fact if you underestimate the serious nature of your addiction your odds of success are greatly decreased. If you are not fully prepared for the challenge ahead of you, once the withdrawal starts to really kick in you’ll be ready to give up.

So the first thing you need to do is accept the fact that your coffee habit is a real addiction. This is absolutely something you can handle just don’t make the mistake of expecting it to be easy.

Once you’re dialed in to the right frame of mind it’s a good idea to find a replacement product to help ease the transition into a caffeine free lifestyle. Some people use decaf coffee for this but you’d be better off with an herbal supplement like Ginseng or Hawthorne.

The problem with decaffeinated brew is it’s actually worse for you than standard coffee. Many of the chemicals used to extract the caffeine are quite harsh and some have been dubbed carcinogenic – or cancer causing!

As a long-term plan ridding your system of caffeine so you can then fill it with cancer-causing solvents is not recommended. If you feel strongly that decaf can help you through the first couple of weeks fine, just be sure to stick with your initial timeline and don’t keep drinking it for an extended period.

Stimulant herbs like those mentioned above will give you a natural lift and promote increased energy without any negative side-effects. Of course you should ask your doctor if you are healthy enough to use herbal supplements just to be on the safe side.

In addition to using a replacement drink to lessen the strain of change, you can apply the half-hour push technique to strengthen your psychological resolve. When your body goes into withdrawal and you feel a strong need for your substitute beverage, wait another half hour and focus your awareness on how your body feels during this 30 minutes.

Be mindful of the fact that you made it through the small delay and congratulate yourself for showing this kind of resolve. On a psychological level this simple exercise will give you an extraordinary boost of confidence.

Another very easy but incredibly effective technique is to change your morning routine. If you have become accustomed to having your coffee in the kitchen, start having your substitute (or nothing at all) on the back porch.

Even change procedures not seemingly related to your caffeine intake. For instance, change the order of your morning activities slightly; if you used to shower first and then brush your teeth start doing it backwards.

The idea of a routine change is to disrupt familiar patterns and give your mind something new to focus on. Stepping into an entirely new pattern will take your mind off the withdrawal and significantly reduce cravings.

You’ll find a large part of your quitting caffeine is the mind game. Master this and you’ve won the battle.

How to Travel, Wherever You Are

Wednesday 1 October 2008 @ 5:41 am

Traveling is one of the great thrills of life. Exploring a new place, experiencing a new culture, or trying new foods simply opens your mind to the enormous world beyond your own experience. So what’s to stop you from spreading your wings and taking off?

How about money, children, time or a job? The truth is that everyday life often gets in the way of our desires to explore, travel and have great adventures. That doesn’t mean it’s not possible if you are willing to be creative. Here are a few ideas of how you can get past those limitations and travel, no matter where your life finds you.

1. Stay Close to Home. If finance, gas prices, young children, or health limitations make extended travel impossible, consider a vacation close to home. This could mean a day trip to the local beach or a short overnight at the B&B in the next town. The really excitement of travel is to discover something new right? You can do that by visiting the re-enactment at the local state park or by taking your first tubing adventure down a local river. If you’ve got health issues or small children, then tamer adventures like a butterfly release or the hot air balloon festival can be exciting just to watch. There are no to limitations on excitement.

2. Let Someone Else Do the Work. Consider a train ride through the countryside. Trains are typically cheaper than other venues, and are an awesome way to catch some scenery, visit a new locale, and have fun on the way. What better excuse for a cocktail or a few card games? You could also take a ferry ride or fishing boat for a quick excursion. Many cities have dinner boats that just leave shore for the evening.

3. Pitch a Tent. If money is your main concern, then there is nothing like pitching a tent to get away from it all. This takes a bit of preparation, but disconnecting from your cell phone and the television for a few days is guaranteed to have a calming effect. If you’re worried about being bored bring a fishing pole and a canteen for hiking. If you really enjoy new experiences, camping is guaranteed to introduce you to something different every time you go.

4. Do it together. Finally, consider chipping in for a house on the beach with a few other couples or families. Or invite your extended family to join you in that cabin in the mountains. This is a good way to share the cost, and spend time with people you miss in a venue where you won’t be stepping on each other’s toes all the time. Just imagine sitting on the beachside patio of a million dollar mansion in matching Adirondack chairs with an in-law who you’ve never seen so relaxed. Priceless.

The important point is that travel is about new experiences. These can be found every day, and in every corner of the earth. Even your own.

Romantic Gifts Ideas For Both Men and Women

Tuesday 30 September 2008 @ 1:09 pm

Relationships take complete effort by both people involved in order to keep them moving and working. It would make sense that the same would apply to romance. If a couple wants to introduce romance into their relationship, it would make sense to have both people make romantic efforts. In fact, it just doesn’t seem fair to have only one party making all of the effort! Both men and women can take part in exchanging romantic gestures and gifts for maximum romantic results.

Men are usually the ones retailers think of when it comes to buying romantic gifts. You can always find flowers, chocolates, jewelry and great greeting cards to get your romantic message across. While these romantic gifts are great, they can become stale and feel generic and unimaginative after some time. It’s time to think beyond what you usually do for romantic gifts and pleasantly surprise your partner.

When you go shopping for your wife or your girlfriend, don’t go to the same stores you’ve always gone to buy your gifts. Do something different. Instead, get her something from a bath and body shop, a new flower shop, a lingerie store, an unusual piece of jewelry, a liquor store and a new card store. Take each of these gifts and wrap them individually. On your next shopping trip, buy all that you can in her favorite or favored scent. If you can, get her body/hand lotion, shampoo, conditioner, soap, dusting powder, shower gel, potpourri, bath oils and fragranced candles. You can wrap these individually or give them to her all at once.

For an unexpected twist, rent a tuxedo and wear it home one day without explanation. You can ring the front doorbell and wait for her to answer with flowers and a bottle of wine in your arms. Another way to really sweep her off her feet is to tape the most important game of the season for your favorite sports team and take her out to dinner instead. This is probably the most romantic gift she’ll think you’ve ever given her!

Now it’s time for the women to think about romantic gifts for their men! Men aren’t as tricky as they might seem when it comes to creating romantic gift ideas. Write him a love letter. Follow that up with a naughty love letter. Follow that one up with a flat out provocative love letter. Spray each one of your letters with his favorite perfume on you and mark the back of each envelope with an imprint of your lips using your brightest red color. Don’t send them all at once. Let the curiosity, expectation and excitement build as he receives each letter.

Send your man flowers at the office. It is perfectly acceptable and he will most likely not expect them! Order him his favorite sandwich and have it delivered for lunch. If possible, send him a piece of lingerie with a note letting him know that you will be waiting for him to bring it to you so that you can change when he gets home. He’ll be home early that day!

Finally, one of the most romantic gifts women can give to men is to embrace their passions. You don’t have to share his love of baseball or fishing, but you can recognize that his passion for whatever activity is what makes him happy and who he is. The trick is to remind him every day of why he should still be passionate about you!

Men and women can have fun, increase intimacy and renew their relationships over and over again with romantic gifts and gestures. It takes one person to make the first move and you will most likely find that romance is contagious. You’ll both want to feel that way every day and you can with romantic gifts for each other.

Romantic and Unique Gifts For Him or Her

Tuesday 30 September 2008 @ 10:04 am

Wanting to have romance in a relationship is easy, but actually taking the steps to be romantic can be the hard part! Steps like actually going out of your way to find a romantic and unique gift.

The one thing that stops most people from giving their partner a unique romantic gift is that they really don’t know what to get them. For some reason, it is easier for people in relationships to buy gifts for birthdays, Christmas and even anniversaries. Yet when it comes to giving gifts of a romantic nature, it stops some people dead in their tracks. All it takes is just one idea to get the ball rolling in the romantic gift-giving department. Here are some romantic gift ideas to get your started.

Lingerie is a commonly thought of romantic gift, but you can take it to a whole new level. Go to your partner’s favorite lingerie store, buy your selection and bring it home. Here comes a new twist to this idea. Instead of putting the lingerie in the box, fill it with green M&M’s. Why green M&M’s? Green M&M’s are thought to be aphrodisiac candies. Whether this is true or not doesn’t really matter. What they supposedly represent is important! Give her the M&M’s in the lingerie box and the lingerie in an M&M bag. Give her two treats in one!

It used to be that you could only buy Girl Scout cookies once a year. Now people can find them on online auction sites or through their local Girl Scout council. Find your partner’s favorite Girl Scout cookie and buy him or her a few boxes so they won’t run out quickly!

Take your partner out for dinner but don’t leave the car. Put some candles in your glove box in your car and go through the drive through of his or her favorite fast food restaurant. Order whatever he or she wants and get a kid’s meal. Make sure he or she gets the toy. Another way to give him or her a fun surprise is to get the kid’s meal on your own, take the toy home, wrap it and give it to your partner. This can be especially fun when the restaurant is featuring Barbie or Hot Wheels!

Casually find out what his or her favorite toy was when they were a child. If you don’t have any luck there, find out what was important to him or her through the parents. They love to be a part of these kinds of things and might just have some items stored away that you can use to give as romantic gifts to your partner.

Finally, if none of these ideas seem to fit, think about putting an advertisement in your local paper announcing your love for your partner. It doesn’t have to be for any special occasion like many other ads. All you have to do is claim your love for him or her.

There are just a few ideas for romantic and unique gifts that you can enjoy giving your partner. If none of these seem to fit your relationship, use these ideas to inspire your own original gifts. The more original and personal the romantic gift is, the sweeter the rewards!

It is Not Just Women Who Care For Their Hair

Monday 29 September 2008 @ 9:34 pm

Once upon a time it was mainly women who dominated the buying of hair care products but this trend is now being overtaken by the fact that many men are now also very interested in taking care of their appearance and making sure that they are giving their hair the best attention they can.

Various hair styles and lengths are seen amongst men from long hair to the short back and sides look as well as many others, but what is important is that the products that are being used are natural making the hair easy to manage.

Depending on what type of work you do should really depend on the type of hair style that you should have. For instance if you have a job in construction then short hair will be best as it be easy to clean, whereas if you work in a office then perhaps you may be able to get away with having hair that is a little longer.

But whatever hair style that you decide upon the secret to having hair that is healthy is finding products that are going to work for you. A lot of the products that are available are nothing more than a cocktail of chemicals so you need to source a range of products that contain only natural ingredients in order to help cleanse your hair and to prevent any damage to the hair or to the scalp.

For some men there seems to be some problems that they experience that women do not. Such as developing a receding hairline and there are ways to help overcome this problem and all comes down to the manner in which the hair is cut and styled.

Other hair styles that many men some to go for in the messy look but for this you need to have your hair cut to a fairly short length and it is also referred to as the natural look. But in most cases in order for the hair to look messy it more than often needs to be styled in this manner.

The best way to get this look is to apply an oil to the hair, rather than a gel, as this will help to keep the moisturized and the same with the scalp. Simply apply a small amount to the hair when wet and rub in and allow to settle. Once dry it will fall into place and look quite attractive to many women.

Regardless of the style that you opt for you need to exercise the same level of caution as many women do. Such as avoiding excessive heat to the hair which can be easily done if using a hair dryer or other types of styling appliances that rely on heat.

Many of the gels and sprays that are available for the hair can make the hair become dry as well as the scalp, and if the scalp is dry this can lead to dandruff. The best styling for men is to keep the hair short and not to do anything with it.

Get more information about caring for your hair. Spend time learning about skin care products and get some information on natural hair care also.
